Why is Vedanta relevant today?

Vedanta is a modern day worldwide movement rooted in perhaps the oldest philosophy and spiritual awakening in human history. The movement was founded by the redoubtable Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) to spread the message of religious harmony and universal spirituality propagated by his great master Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa (1836-1886). Both expounded the philosophy and teachings of Vedic scriptures and Yogic traditions of the sages of ancient India. Today, Vedanta's followers around the world come from as wide a range of religious, ethnic, national, avocational and intellectual dispositions as the humanity itself. With its inspirational and non-judgmental teachings that emphasize toleration and celebration of diversity, Vedanta has universal appeal and relevance, especially in modern times. For example, Vedanta embraces scientific inquiry and technological discoveries that are advancing knowledge and enhancing our lives. The Vedic belief is also deeply entwined with man's responsibilities toward preservation and conservation of the natural world. The devotees are free to learn, discuss, adapt and conduct their individual spiritual lives and pursuits, and thus exert their influence on the group. Therefore, Vedanta is an open belief system which provides spiritual and philosophical guidance for living meaningful lives, but it seeks to do so in a manner that stimulates consciousness and promotes thoughtful inner debate.
